SUSL Rally Writing Contest 2009

In the frame of the "Soy Unica Soy Latina" Rally on March 2009, Family Eden sponsored a writing contest open for young Latina girls, to answer the question "What Does Being Latina Mean to Me?."

The submissions were received during the rally and at the Family Eden blog. The winners were selected combining the votes from readers of the blog and an evaluation by the Latinas Unidas Board of Directors with the following results:

First Prize
Ellie Garbanzo
Webster Thomas High School

Second Prize
Mila Delgado Sutton
Spencerport Cosgrove Middle School

Third Prize
Jilese Rodriguez
Gates-Chili Middle School

Awarding the Prizes

Award Ceremony As a fun and more meaningful to way to give First Place winner Ellie Garbanzo her prize, a Toshiba Laptop, we decided to give her a surprise during the annual students awards ceremony at her school Webster Thomas High School on May 5th 2009.

Daisy Rivera-Algarin, Latinas Unidas President, gave a very inspiring speech about the meaning of this contest that clearly touched the audience. And as Ellie's name was announced, the attendees were certainly surprised and in awe to learn she had won a laptop for writing an essay. Ellie Garbanzo is currently a Senior and the laptop will be a great tool for her as she leaves for college.
